Dolphins Update: New Meets and Volunteer Sign-Ups
The Waynewood Dolphins Update
June 14, 2022
In this message:
1. More Volunteer Sign-Ups Now Open! (And a note on volunteering)
2. Swimmer Sign-ups: B Meet @Hollin Meadows, Fort Hunt Sportsman
Relays
3. Upcoming Calendar items
1. Volunteer for Saturday (6/18) Home A Meet, Away B Meet (6/20)
Volunteer opportunities
for the next two meets are now open here.
A note on volunteering for newer families:
For
many meets, we divide work responsibilities into shifts. To help you plan, we post
“start” and “finish” times for these shifts. While we try to give accurate
guidance, factors like weather, meet size, and technical difficulties aren’t
something we control and -- like baseball games – meets end when everything is
done rather than at a specific time. For this reason:
First shift volunteers: It’s important that you be ready and arrive by
the stated “start” time but your “finish” time isn’t necessarily going to be
exactly what sign-ups say. We try to cut the meet responsibilities into equitable
parts and we often do a shift change after backstroke (concessions roles typically follow clock times closely).
Second
shift (or later) volunteers: We do need you to be on site and
ready at the designated “start” time for your shift but it might not happen
exactly at this time. If you are on the last shift, please be prepared to stay
until your job function is no longer required.
For
all volunteers, if you have a “hard stop” need, that doesn’t mean you can’t or
shouldn’t volunteer but please reach out to let us know this before the event. If your shift sign-up just isn’t a fit for your potential conflict we’ll let you
know and might recommend a different role. Often, another volunteer might
actually be willing to help by starting a little early.
In
addition, if your plans change and you can’t make a shift you signed up for
that starts in less than 24 hours, please make an effort to find a friend or
neighbor on the team who might be able to take your shift. It is a hardship on
the team to find last minute replacements.
2. Three Swimmer Sign-Up Opportunities:
Next Monday’s B Meet @Hollin Meadows (6/20)
Sign-up here for ONLY 2 strokes (plus optional IM) for Monday’s B Meet. We don’t know yet whether IMs will happen or not. 10 & Unders must be cleared by coaches to sign up for Breast, Fly or IM. A meet swimmers may want to wait until after Saturday’s A meet because they are not permitted to sign up for a stroke in which they placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd. but don’t forget to sign up by 6 pm, Saturday 6/18!
Indicate Availability for the Fort Hunt Sportsman Relays meet on Wednesday, June 22 at 6:15pm at Stratford Landing, 2300 Brinitzer Way, Alexandria, VA 22308
The Fort Hunt Sportsman Relays will be held Wednesday, June 22. Waynewood
warm-ups will be at 5 pm. It is a seeded meet (swimmers are selected by the
head coach, like an A meet). However, Coaches try to focus on B meet swimmers
and don’t work off the ladder in seeding this meet.
- This meet is ALL relays.
- Instead of swimming against just one team, there are a bunch of area teams represented (MVP, Stratford, Riverside Gardens, Little Hunting Park, Mansion House….)
- There are relays
where boys and girls swim together, ones that include different aged
swimmers
Indicate Availability for Saturday (6/25) A Meet @ Dominion Hills
Make sure that you have indicated your Swimmers’ availability or
non-availability by 11pm on Monday 6/20! Swimmers will be
notified no later than Thursday (6/23) if they are participating in this meet.
Please indicate your swimmer’s availability for this meet on Swimtopia before 6 pm, Saturday, June 18. Your swimmer will be notified on Sunday night if they will be swimming in this meet.
3. Upcoming Calendar items:
Thursday, June 16th
First Teen Night – Water balloon battleship
For this week’s teen night, we will be playing battleship on the
wallball courts! We will split into teams and take turns throwing water
balloons over the wall to “sink” the other teams ships. Make sure to wear
clothes you don’t mind getting wet.
IMPORTANT: Participants
must be registered Waynewood Dolphin swimmers and be 13 or above on the date of
the teen night to attend. Please respect that no exceptions will be made.
Friday, June 17th
First Pep Rally – “Motivational T-shirts” – 6 pm
Coach Dylan asks that
everyone bring a plain Blue or White T-shirt to the pep rally on Friday to
decorate with Dolphin Spirit. The results are always really cool. Paint and
masking tape will be provided. If our more artistic Dolphins want to get a head
start, they are welcome to make stencils ahead of time and bring them to the
Pep Rally. It will be great to see our Dolphins sporting these T-shirts at
practices and events! In addition, there will be cheers and the announcement of
the week’s practice monsters ....don't miss it!
Helpful hint: contact paper makes for an excellent stencil.
Saturday, June 18th
A Meet – Fairfax
Station @ Waynewood – 9 am (8 am warm-up)
Swimmers will be notified
no later than Thursday if they are participating in this meet. Warm-ups for
Dolphins begin promptly at 8 am. If you have indicated availability for the A
Meet it is absolutely essential that you notify us immediately if your status
changes. We have a limited ability to substitute given time but (rare) no shows
result in plain to see vacant lanes that hurt the team and happen in plain
view.
Monday, June 20th
Away B Meet – Waynewood @ Hollin Meadows – 6 pm
We’ll share more details on this meet this weekend.
Don’t hesitate to contact our Team Reps Frederick & Tom at [email protected] with any questions.
Go Dolphins!
