VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers are a crucial part of our swim team and your assistance is essential to ensure that the team is well-organized and operates efficiently for the benefit of our kids. If you have any questions about the volunteer jobs, please contact our volunteer leaders or our swim team representatives.
**All volunteers are requested to wear blue shorts/skirt and plain white shirt. Meet officials (Referee, Starter, Timers, and Stroke and Turn Judges and Relay Take Off Judges) should not wear clothing displaying a logo.**

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Announcer
Assists officials, coaches, swimmers, and spectators by announcing upcoming
events/heats and previous results.
Clerk of Course
The “gatekeeper” for all swimmers in the meet: checks swimmers against meet
sheets; organizes swimmers in lanes; sends them to the start at the proper time.
Needs patience but does not need knowledge of swimming technique.
Communications
This position ensures that information about all swim team happenings is
disseminated to our parents, swimmers and coaches. You will see emails at least
weekly with all upcoming events as well as last minute calls for volunteers and
other important announcements.
Concessions
Concessions is a large part of our fund-raising. The profits go toward social
activities of our swimmers and upkeep of our competition equipment for our pool.

Data Coordinator
Data Coordinator works with the HyTek system to assist Team Reps, Coaches
and Table Coordinators prep for meets and report results to the NVSL. Data
Coordinator enters all swimmers' times in the computer database and print ribbon
labels at meets. Does not need knowledge of swimming technique, but basic
computer skills and willingness to learn a unique program.
Head Official Coordinator
Responsible for refereeing deck, scheduling meet officials and taking care of
start equipment. Officials responsible for and needed for each meet - Referee,
Starter, Stroke and Turn Judges, Relay Take-off Judges. Please consider being
an official.
Marshal
Volunteer to observe swimmers and keep spectators from pool deck during
warm-ups and the swim meet to ensure safety. Keeps pool deck clear. Maintains
silence/quiet during starts.
Meet Officials
Meet officials include: referee, starter, stroke and turn judges, timers and relay
take-off judges. Meet officials workers are requested to wear blue shorts/skirt and
plain white shirt. Meet officials should not wear clothing displaying a team logo.
Meet Set Up/Take Down
A team of volunteer parents and swim team coaches sets up the pool for all home
meets. Setting up the pool for a home meet at Waynewood takes approximately
90 minutes with a team of 12-15 people. This is an especially good volunteer job for
those parents who want to sit and enjoy the meet. To volunteer, just show up early
and stay after.
Parking
Help direct folks into the parking lot. The parking lead and volunteers are finished
before the meet even starts so you can sit back and enjoy the event.
Photographer
One of the highlights of each year is the end of season video with photos from all
the swim team events during the summer season. This job involves taking photos
of all our swimmers during practices, meets, pep rallies, etc to make sure that
everyone gets to see themselves at the end of season banquet on the big screen!
Referee
The referee is the chief official for each swim meet. The referee is responsible for
the conduct of the meets and is the final authority on the interpretation and
enforcement of all swimming rules. The referee runs the meet. This position
requires one to attend the NVSL training to be a referee (half day training before
the season starts) and have experience as a Starter and Stroke and Turn Judge.
Social
We try to schedule social activities for the swimmers during the summer. Parents
are needed to assist and chaperone these events. In the past, these have included
pep rallies, organizing “A” meet post lunches, Friday afternoon movie theater
outings, movie nights in the WRA field and teen nights. Without significant parental
support, these events can not happen.
Sponsorship
Responsible for marketing to our local businesses the opportunity to donate and
advertise during our swim season and coordinating placement on banner and
announcements at swim meets.
Starter
The starter is responsible for ensuring that all swimmers are given a fair and
equitable start. The starter announces each event in the meet, gives a
“Take Your Mark” and starts the race with the sound of a buzzer. You must attend
the NVSL training to be a starter (half day training before the start of the season)
and have experience as a Stroke and Turn Judge.
Stroke and Turn Judge
The stroke and turn judge watches the swimmers as they compete to ensure that
they are completing their races within the defined parameters set by NVSL.
The stroke and turn judge lead helps coordinate all the stroke and turn judges to
ensure consistency of each event in the swim meet.
Relay Takeoff Judge
Observes start of each swimmer during a relay to ensure proper starts. Does not
need knowledge of swimming technique.
Team Representatives
Representatives oversee coaches, lead coordinators, volunteers and all oversight of
swim team meets and activities. This position is a 2 year commitment.
Timers
Timers are the most important people to every swimmer because they determine
each swimmer’s official time for the race. There are three timers for each lane
(a mix of home and away team parents). Being a timer is a good entry-level
position for new parents. Does not need knowledge of swimming technique.
Table Coordinator and Table Workers
The time cards from the timers and any disqualification slips go the Table Workers
who determine the order of finish for each event, score the meet, and prepare
ribbons for the participants. Several people from each team perform these functions
to ensure accurate results.
