    1) Two New Records for the Dolphins

The Dolphins beat the Truro Swordfish, 261-158, Saturday on a beautiful day in Fairfax County. Congrats to our swimmers for a strong performance and a dominating victory.

It capped an impressive start to the season for the Dolphins:

    • At Monday’s B Meet against Mount Vernon Park, Connor Minear set a new Dolphins record in Boys 13-14 50m Breaststroke with a time of 34.31. The previous record of 34.62 was set 24 years ago by Patrick Woodward in 1999.
    • Then on Saturday at Truro, our Boys 13-14 100m Medley Relay team of Moses Wolf, Connor Minear, Marshall LoCascio, and Joseph Sperber smashed another Dolphins record. The relay team finished with a time of 58.09. The previous record of 59.78 was set in 2017.

You can find the full results here and the updated individual top times here.

    • Photos from the meet are available on Instagram and will be posted soon to SmugMug.

    2) Little Dolphins Start Tuesday

We love our Little Dolphins and our coaches can’t wait to start working with them!

    • All Little Dolphins will be tested on their first day, Tuesday, June 20 (choose 12 p.m. or 5:30 p.m.) to see if they can swim the length of the pool without touching the side or a lane line.
    • No kickboards or flotation devices will be permitted.
    • The stroke or how they accomplish it does not matter. Safety is our No. 1 concern.

NOTE: Due to Fort Hunt Sportsman Relays, there will be no afternoon practice this Wednesday, June 21. Afternoon Little Dolphins are welcome to join the morning practice as they are able.

    • Our awesome coaches will be in the pool during practice and great lifeguards on the side.
    • We will be cheering for everyone to pass this test, but if they don't, we will cheerfully retest them.
    • Private lessons or sessions with parents is sometimes all it takes to get there.

    A few things about Tuesday:

    • Test day isn't a normal practice. The entire session will be tests so once swimmers have taken it, they're free to go home on this first day.
    • For swimmers who can't come Tuesday, let us know when you plan to join the team (if you haven’t already). This notice will help our coaches plan for when they need to administer later tests.

A few general things about Little Dolphins practice:

    • During the Little Dolphins practice season, you don't need to let us know when swimmers will miss practice.
    • Little Dolphins should only attend one session per day.
    • Let our coaches or Team Reps know if your young swimmer is feeling especially anxious or just isn't enjoying practice. This helps our coaches know where a little extra attention may be needed.
    • We encourage swimmers to bring fins and goggles to practice.

    3) Summer Practice Hours

Monday will be the beginning of our new practice schedule. See details below.

    • Swimmers can swim with their age group in the morning, and/or in the afternoon.
    • We offer these practice times to assist with our swimmers who may have work, camps, or other activities during the day.

There is no afternoon practice on Mondays due to B Meets.

    • If there are specialty meets or events during the week that will cause the cancellation of practice, we will alert you beforehand.

Set your alarms! All swimmers should be on time and prepared to swim at their designated time.

    Morning Practice

    • Ages 9-10—8:00-9:15 a.m.
    • Ages 13 & up—9:00-10:15 a.m.
    • Ages 11-12—10:00-11:15 a.m.
    • Ages 8 & under—11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
    • Little Dolphins—12:00-12:30 p.m.

    Afternoon Practice

    • Ages 10 & under—4:00-4:45 p.m.
    • Ages 11 & up—4:45-5:30 p.m.
    • Little Dolphins—5:30-6:00 p.m.

    4) Monday’s Home B Meet vs. Hollin Meadows

Our next B Meet is Monday at Waynewood. Please arrive 10 minutes before our 5 p.m. warm-ups begin. The meet will start at 6 p.m.

    • The meet will begin with individual medley, then proceed in standard order: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
    • Swimmers are allowed to compete in two strokes, plus IM.
    • For those who swam at Saturday’s A Meet and finished first, second, or third in a stroke event, you can't swim that stroke again at Monday's B Meet.

We will have concessions available for purchase, including hot dogs, hamburgers, water, soda, and Gatorade. Come hungry!

    5) Next Volunteer Slots Open Tuesday

We’ll open sign-ups at 8 p.m. Tuesday for Saturday’s home A Meet vs. Holmes Run Acres and the following Monday’s away B Meet against Highland Park. Click here to sign up.

    • We need to fill all our shifts to run our meets smoothly for the swimmers.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!

    6) Fort Hunt Sportsmen Swim Relays—Wednesday at Stratford Rec Assoc

The Fort Hunt Sportsmen’s Association was organized in 1963 to foster, promote and encourage sports and recreational activities for the youth of our community.

    • This year's relays will be at Stratford Recreation Association, located at 2300 Brinitzer Way, Alexandria, VA 22308.
    • Waynewood warm-ups will be at 5 p.m.
    • It is a seeded meet (swimmers are selected by the head coach, like an A Meet).

We sent the swimmer list around earlier today. Let us know if you did not receive it. If for any reason your swimmer’s availability to swim changes, it’s critical that you let us know to avoid a situation where a relay team can’t compete due to a missing swimmer.

    7) Teen Night—Thursday at 6 p.m. at WRA

The teens are celebrating the beginning of summer with kickball on our first Teen Night.

    • Meet at the pool at 6 p.m.
    • Participants must be registered Waynewood Dolphin swimmers and be 13 or above on the date of the teen night to attend. Please respect that no exceptions will be made.

    8) Motivational T-shirts Pep Rally—Friday at 6 p.m. at WRA

Coach Dylan asks that everyone bring a plain BLUE or WHITE T-shirt to the pep rally on Friday to decorate with Dolphin Spirit. The results are always really cool.

    • Paint and masking tape will be provided.
    • If our more artistic Dolphins want to get a head start, they are welcome to make stencils ahead of time and bring them to the Pep Rally.
    • Helpful hint: Contact paper makes for an excellent stencil.

It will be great to see our Dolphins sporting these T-shirts at practices and events! In addition, there will be cheers and the announcement of the week’s practice monsters.

    9) Division 10 Relay Carnival—June 28

Fox Hunt is the host of this year’s NVSL Division 10 Relay Carnival—a fun event featuring our division rivals. A trophy is awarded to the team that wins the most points and the fastest age group teams have a chance to swim at NVSL All-Star Relays.

    • Selection for Relay Carnival is a lot like an A Meet but with slightly different criteria for selection that could mean inclusion for a few swimmers who don't usually make A Meets.
    • As the name suggests, this is an all-relay meet with six teams competing against each other for a trophy.
    • Swimmers can indicate availability for the Relay Carnival here.
    • Waynewood’s warm-up will be at 6 p.m. and the meet begins promptly at 6:30 p.m.

Don’t let transportation challenges keep your swimmer home—let us know and we can help.

    10) NVSL Standings and Leaderboard

The Northern Virginia Swimming League was founded in 1956 to sponsor competitive swimming and diving in and among the community swimming pools. Waynewood is in Division 10 this year along with five other local swim clubs.

The NVSL website provides useful information about our division, team, and swimmers:

Check it out! You can look up friends from other teams and see how you stack up against other swimmers in our division and in all of the Northern Virginia Swim League.

    11) Away B Meet at Highland Park—June 26

Details are still being worked out, including whether this meet will include IMs. And there could be changes to the stroke order that come from the home team.

    • We’re opening swimmer sign-ups soon and volunteer sign-ups Tuesday. For now, swimmers can sign up for two strokes plus IM. We’ll update when more specifics come through.
    • Registration deadline is Saturday, June 24.
    • Highland Park is located at 6406 Telegraph Rd. in Alexandria.
