1) Déjà Vu: Two More Records for Dolphins
The Dolphins defeated the Holmes Run Acres Hurricanes, 234-186, Saturday in Waynewood to move to 2-0 in Division 10. And just like last week, our 13-14 boys set two new records.
- Boys 13-14 100m Medley Relay: A week after breaking a 2017 record, the team of Marshall LoCascio, Moses Wolf, Connor Minear, and Luke Morris set a Dolphins record Saturday. The relay team finished with a time of 56.83 (last week’s was 58.09).
- Boys 13-14 50m Breaststroke: After first breaking a 24-year-old record June 12, Connor Minear did it again Saturday. He beat his previous time of 34.31 with a record-setting mark of 33.98.
- Outstanding Meet Contribution: The Dolphins’ 9-10 girls took 32 of 36 possible points in individual events at the meet, a team high for Waynewood. In doing so, the girls took first place in all four strokes Saturday and also won their relay race. Cully Rufe, Macy Beizer, Violet Farris, Fiona Mead, Annie Popowich, and Isla Exner all scored points, giving Waynewood an insurmountable edge on the path to a win.
Congrats to our speedy Dolphins. We’re so proud of your accomplishments!
Photos from the meet are available on Instagram and will be posted soon to SmugMug.
- Team results and league Standings can be viewed at NVSL’s website. You can look up friends from other teams and see how you stack up against other swimmers in our division and in all of the Northern Virginia Swim League.
2) Monday’s Away B Meet @ Highland Park
Our next B Meet is 6 p.m. Monday at Highland Park, located at 6406 Telegraph Road, Alexandria, VA 22310.
- Warm-ups begin at 5:25 p.m. Swimmers should arrive by 5:10 p.m.
- There is currently a chance of thunderstorms Monday night. We’ll send you an email and alert should anything change.
Our hosts chose to run the meet in the same sequence Division Championships will be this year: butterfly, IM, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke. The volunteer change will take place after freestyle.
- Reminder: Swimmers can swim only TWO events total (not two plus IM). IMs will only be offered for swimmers in the 9-10 age group or older—no 8 & under IMs for this meet.
Waynewood families should use the Highland Park parking lot. The team areas are under the blue tents at the back of the pool.
- Eat Mor Chikin: Pick up a Chick-fil-A sandwich for dinner. They will have snacks and drinks available for sale.
Due to the B-Meet, there will be NO AFTERNOON PRACTICE FOR DOLPHINS OR LITTLE DOLPHINS.
3) Saturday’s Home A Meet vs. Fox Hunt
Make sure you have indicated each swimmer’s availability or non-availability by 11 p.m. Monday for our next home A Meet vs. Fox Hunt.
- Swimmers will be notified no later than Thursday if they are participating in this meet.
For those who are swimming, plan to be at the pool by 7:45 a.m. to be ready for warm-ups.
4) Wednesday’s Division Relay Carnival @ Fox Hunt
Fox Hunt is the host of this year’s NVSL Division 10 Relay Carnival—a fun event featuring our division rivals.
-
Make sure that you have indicated your swimmers’ availability or non-availability by 11 p.m. Monday. Swimmers will be notified Tuesday evening about participation in this meet.
Selection for Relay Carnival is a lot like an A Meet but with slightly different criteria for selection that could mean inclusion for a few swimmers who don't usually make A Meets.
-
Barring a weather delay, this is a meet that actually goes quick and could realistically be over by 8:30 pm.
-
What is Relay Carnival? It isn't that different from the relays swum at the end of A Meets except there are six teams instead of two and EACH age group swims BOTH a freestyle relay AND a medley relay (backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle). So swimmers, regardless of age, have more opportunities to participate than in A Meet relays.
-
Attendance is a big factor in winning this meet. Please do try to be available and don’t hesitate to ask for transportation help if that can get your swimmer to the meet on time.
Due to the Relay Carnival event Wednesday, there will be NO AFTERNOON PRACTICE FOR DOLPHINS OR LITTLE DOLPHINS.
5) Next Volunteer Slots Open Thursday
Due to the focus on Relay Carnival this week, we’ll open sign-ups at 8 p.m. Thursday for Saturday’s home A Meet and the following Monday’s home B Meet against Hayfield Farm.
- We need to fill all our shifts to run our meets smoothly for the swimmers.
Reminder: A Meet timers work the whole meet, just like other volunteers. Some of our timers will stay in position to time the relays and others become relay take-off judges.
6) Teen Night—Thursday at 6:30 p.m. @ Rudy’s Golf
The teens had a great time last week and are taking the fun on the road this Thursday for mini golf at Rudy’s Golf 6625 South Van Dorn St., Alexandria, VA 22315.
- Cost is $12.
- Meet in the pool parking lot at 6 to organize rides.
Parents: Coaches who are 18 are able to drive other swimmers, but to ride with them age 13-17 swimmers need a signed note from a parent giving permission to ride with a coach.
- The coaches organizing this event also need to have an idea of who is coming.
- Please have your swimmer tell Coach Dylan Paradise at practice if: 1) he/she is coming and 2) whether they’ll ride with a coach or make their own way to Rudy’s.
7) Motivational T-Shirts Pep Rally—Friday at 6 p.m. @ WRA
We’re trying this again after rain and thunder spoiled our plans last Friday. Coach Dylan asks that everyone bring a plain BLUE or WHITE T-shirt to the pep rally on Friday to decorate with Dolphin Spirit. The results are always really cool.
- Paint and masking tape will be provided.
- If our more artistic Dolphins want to get a head start, they are welcome to make stencils ahead of time and bring them to the Pep Rally.
- Helpful hint: Contact paper makes for an excellent stencil.
It will be great to see our Dolphins sporting these T-shirts at practices and events! In addition, there will be cheers and the announcement of the week’s practice monsters.
8) Get Your Dolphins Gear
Make sure you’re representing Waynewood in style with this new Dolphins swim backpack—on sale at our concession stand for $22. It’s designed to be the perfect carrying case for wet swimsuits, towels, and swim accessories.
9) Spirit Wear Pickup Opportunity
Spirit wear, including T-Shirts and caps ordered during registration, will be available for pickup from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at WRA on Monday.
- Please come get your items or send your swimmer.
