2024 Waynewood Dolphins Season

NEW: Summer Schedule, Apply to Coach, Upcoming Events, Swimming Prep Opportunities

Summer is fast approaching and we are gearing up for the 2024 swim season.

This summer, the Waynewood Dolphins will participate in NVSL Division 7. Our first afterschool practice will be Tuesday, May 28. Time Trials is Saturday June 8, our first B Meet with Mount Vernon Park is June 10.

The Little Dolphins program for younger and less experienced team members starts Tuesday, June 18. The Divisionals Meet for the team’s fastest swimmers will take place Saturday, July 20 and we’ll gather together for the team banquet that evening to celebrate the season’s conclusion.

Our full schedule for this summer is mostly final and available here (but still subject to change).

This newsletter goes to members of last year’s team. If you’re not planning on rejoining, you’ll get off our distribution list in May. If you know neighbors who didn’t swim with us last year but may be interested, please forward this to them.

Apply to be a Dolphins Coach

The Waynewood Dolphins are looking for coaches for the 2024 Summer Season. Competition for these positions is consistently fierce. Applicants should please be thoughtful, thorough, and accurate with answers.

Coach applications will be accepted until 11:59 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. The coach selection committee will meet in late April with a goal of extending offers in early May (with Little Dolphin coach offers likely coming later).

    Age requirements for the jobs:

    • Assistant Head Coach: High school graduate
    • Assistant Coach: Completed 9th grade
    • Little Dolphins Head Coach: Completed 10th grade
    • Little Dolphins Coach: Completed 7th grade

Please click here to view the online application and apply.

    Volunteers for Officials Needed

To run a swim meet, the Waynewood Dolphins need to provide a number of officials to make calls and ensure rules are followed. Being an official requires some training in the spring. One of the benefits of being a certified official is that it fully meets the team volunteer requirement and an official doesn’t have to work every meet. If you’re willing to help us by learning more about what this involves, please reach out ([email protected]).

    Upcoming:

    Summer Swim Team Registration

We'll be opening registration the second half of April and you'll be able to register through our website. When we open registration, we encourage you to register as soon as you’re confident you’ll be swimming with us this summer (it helps us in making decisions about supplies and how many coaches to hire).

    Super Sunday & Swimsuits

Super Sunday is Sunday, May 5. We'll share details and times later but this is an opportunity to meet Team Reps and Coaches, ask questions, and buy swimsuits. Because our previous suit is no longer being manufactured, we’ll have a new team swimsuit this summer that will likely also be our suit in summer 2025. Details to come.

    Summer Prep Opportunities

The Potomac Marlins Swimming Club is offering an 8-week summer prep program for swimmers who are at least 8-years-old. One practice site offered is the George Washington Rec Center by Mount Vernon High School. Practices begin April 1 and late registration closes April 15. This is a fantastic way to help swimmers get a competitive boost for the season whether or not they’re already enrolled in the Dolphins’ Winter Swim program. Details and registration here.

Need something for a swimmer still learning to swim? Fairfax County Parks Authority offers an array of learn-to-swim programs that may help younger swimmers prepare for the Little Dolphins swim test (a 25 meter unassisted swim across the pool) or slightly more advanced swimmers considering the Dolphins’ competitive team program for the summer. (Note: the “Summer Swim League” offered by FCPA is not the Waynewood Dolphins summer program)
