Dolphins Midweek Update - June 19, 2024
Dolphins Midweek Update
6/19/24
***IMPORTANT A MEET UPDATE: Due to heat, the Dolphins away A Meet this Saturday (6/22) at Dominion Hills is being moved up to an 8 a.m. start. All other meet activities including the warm-up and WRA parking lot caravan gathering will also be one hour earlier. Please email Team Reps immediately if this change impacts your swimmer’s availability.***
In this message:
- Reminders: Team photo, Motivational T-shirts pep rally, Teen Night
- Results: Hollin Meadows B Meet
- Update: Saturday A Meet @DH now starts at 8 a.m.
- Sign up!: Highland Park B Meet swims and volunteer roles
- Relay Carnival @Canterbury Woods (Wednesday, 6/26)
1) Reminders: Team photo, Motivational T-shirts, Teen Night
The Dolphins have two once-a-season events this Friday plus a Teen Night Thursday.
Team and individual photos (Friday morning, 6/21):
- Swimmers coming for individual pictures, please arrive by 7:30 a.m. There may not be individual pictures after the team photo due to the photographer’s schedule and the team’s need for the pool practice space.
- Dolphin swimmers, including Little Dolphins, are asked to arrive for the team photo by 8:15 a.m. We suggest swimmers wear their team swimsuits. If you don’t have one a blue or black swimsuit will look best/fine. Coaches and Little Dolphins coaches should join swimmers for the team pictures.
- Please come hydrated and consider sun block. It’s likely going to be a hot day for lining up – this has been an actual issue the past two seasons, even in the early morning.
- The photographer’s flier has more details (sent in Sunday newsletter, 6/16).
- Friday morning practice changes: 9-10 swimmers whose practice is disrupted may join either the 11-12 or 8 & under practice on Friday.
Friday 6 p.m. pep rally:
Coach Dylan asks that everyone bring a plain BLUE or WHITE T-shirt to the pep rally on Friday to decorate with Dolphin Spirit. The results are always really cool.
- Paint and other need supplies will be provided.
- Hint: T-shirts that are all or mostly cotton tend to work best. The Variety Store, WalMart, and Amazon are all good places to look for plain T-shirts.
Thursday Teen Night:
- Details continue to elude us but we keep hearing it has something to do with golf and it is Thursday.
- Consult with your teen for more information.
- Reminder: like all teen nights, this is only for registered Dolphins who are 13+.
2) Results: Hollin Meadows B Meet
We got through all four strokes but didn’t get to IMs (no surprise). We continue to have strong B Meet attendance, 157 Dolphins swam in Monday’s meet.
- Team progress: The Dolphins entered the Hollin Meadows B Meet with nine 8 & under group swimmers having achieved a legal breaststroke swim this year in a meet and six with a legal butterfly. After the meet, we now have twelve meet-certified breaststrokers and eight for butterfly in our 8 & under groups.
- B Meets are fun with only a moderate level of competition to foster swimmer development. You don’t need a team swimsuit to participate. If your swimmer hasn’t swum in one this year, we encourage him/her to try.
- The results of the Dolphins B Meet and new swim ladder are available here.
- The team photo gallery is also filling up nicely with updates from both the Hollin Meadows B Meet and Canterbury Woods A Meet.
3) UPDATE: Saturday A Meet @DH now starts at 8 a.m.
We agreed with host Dominion Hills to change the start time for our Saturday (6/22) A Meet based on the recommendation of NVSL.
- The new timeline:
- 6:15 a.m. – The Dolphins will meet in the WRA parking lot to caravan.
- 7:25 a.m. – The Dolphins warm-up begins at DH.
- 8:00 a.m. – First event (boys 8 & under freestyle) swims.
- Dominion Hills’ address: 6000 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington 22205.
- Volunteer signups are now open (but we understand if you’re waiting for the swimmer list).
- Parking notes from DH: “We will be reserving our main parking lot off of Wilson Blvd for WW families. Parking is also available along Wilson Blvd and in the surrounding neighborhoods.”
- Food forecast from DH: “We will have cash-only concessions for the entire meet including drinks (water, sodas, coffee, and Gatorade), Anita's breakfast burritos, bagels and donuts. Small bills are greatly appreciated!”
- There will be an optional team lunch immediately after the meet – details to come.
- Swimmers indicating availability will be notified of team selections no later than Thursday evening via email.
4) Sign Up! Highland Park B Meet swims and volunteer roles
All signups are available here.
We’ve open swimmer sign ups for the Home B Meet with Highland Park on Monday (6/24) at 6 p.m.:
- Strokes will go in regular order: free, back, breast, fly, IM.
- We will swim IMs at this meet but swimming an IM counts as one of a swimmer’s two strokes (maximum) allowed for the meet.
- For A Meet swimmers, remember if you finish first, second, or third you can’t swim the stroke again at the next B Meet.
- Deadline to register is Saturday (6/22) at 6 p.m.
- The 10 & under breast/fly permission list will remain in place all season.
5) Relay Carnival @Canterbury Woods (Wednesday, 6/26)
We 've opened swimmer availability declarations for Division 7 Relay Carnival -- we'll explain Relay Carnival in the Sunday newsletter but the deadline for declaring availability for Relay Carnival is this Monday at 11 p.m. (same deadline as the third A Meet).
- The swimmer selection criteria for Relay Carnival is similar to an A Meet (and we’ll have A Meet sign ups for 6/29 too this weekend), but there are some distinctions we’ll go over on Sunday.
- Please don’t let the lack of a ride/transportation from Waynewood keep your swimmer away if he/she is otherwise available and selected to swim: a big part of team success at Relay Carnival is getting your team to the meet. Email Team Reps if you need help here – the team will find a teammate who will gladly give your swimmer a ride.
