1) A Meet @Lakeview recap
Waynewood took an early 50-40 lead in the freestyle portion of Saturday’s meet but ultimately came up short 189-230 in the NVSL Division 7 matchup with the Lakeview Marlins. Dolphins meet highlights:
- Outstanding contribution: The Dolphins’ 8 & under boys showed off their speed and kept Waynewood competitive on Saturday, taking 33 of 36 age group points awarded for individual events. Gavin Cooper, Eddy Vogel, Bear Bowman, Darien Hill, Quinn Pullen, and Jack Samford all scored points for the Dolphins. The 100m freestyle relay team of Vogel, Bowman, Pullen, and Cooper convincingly won their relay race 1:24.87 to 2:09.45.
- Race of the meet: There were some close ones won by each side, but the crown this week goes to the 11-12 boys 100m medley relay squad of Ryan Charipar, Isaac Exner, Alexander Mamienski, and Owen Pugh. This race started tight, saw Lakeview jump out to a lead but Waynewood fought throughout to keep it close and ultimately took the lead in the final meter for a figurative photo finish win of 1:12.07 to 1:12.15.
- Other winning Dolphins relay squads:
- Girls 8 & under 100m freestyle relay (1:51.29 vs. 2:03.45)
- Boys 13-14 100m medley relay (1:00.93 vs. 1:02.70)
- Boys 15-18 200m medley relay (1:59.57 vs. 2:04.44)
Dolphins photo gallery: We have a new photo folder from Saturday’s A Meet up as well as many new photos added to the Time Trials and MVP B Meet from after our last mention about the SmugMug photo gallery. Photos get added throughout the season, and off not all at once for a meet, so check back frequently.
2) Sportsmanship reminder
Even though the Dolphins came up short on the scoreboard Saturday, the meet was an extremely positive environment with frequent shows of strong sportsmanship from athletes, coaches, and parents from both teams. There was loud cheering and emotional flashes of both excitement and disappointment on the faces of swimmers, which are expected in a competitive meet. It was exactly the spirit and atmosphere NVSL seeks to foster.
- NVSL's Standards of Conduct promote "respect, fairness, civility, honesty, responsibility, and appropriate behavior."
- They exist to "foster a positive atmosphere of respect for all participants, officials, and spectators …."
- Please help the Coaches and Team Reps ensure that swimmers and other Waynewood parents adhere to the letter and spirit of these rules at meets by showing respect to others at all times and avoiding even quiet comments that others may find unsportsmanlike or lead swimmers into situations -- sometimes this may require a gentle reminder.
- For more information, NVSL's Standards of Conduct and rules are available in the NVSL Handbook.
3) B Meet @Hollin Meadows, Monday (6/22)
The Dolphins swim Monday (6/22) with the Hollin Meadows Barracudas.
- Arrive by 5:15 pm for a 5:25 pm warm-up. The first meet event (boys 8 & under freestyle) starts at 6 pm.
- HM’s address: 2500 Woodlawn Trail, Alexandria, VA 22306
- No 4 pm or later practices on Monday due to the meet.
- Notes from HM: Park in their pool parking lot, swimmers may want to bring chairs.
- Volunteers: please remember that timers, clerks, and table workers are requested to wear a white top and navy (or dark) shorts/pants/skirt while on duty (with no team logos).
- Swim schedule: The meet will follow the standard order of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and IM. We expect this meet will go later than past meets at Hollin Meadows usually go, but it isn’t guaranteed we’ll get to all events if we are running later into the evening.
- Food forecast from HM: “We will have concessions available for purchase, including plenty of water, sodas, and Gatorades. We will serve Chick Fil A, and a variety of snack items so bring your appetites. Please let families know they can pay by cash or Venmo.”
4) Upcoming Home A Meet with Dominion Hills, Saturday (6/27)
The Dolphins’ second Northern Virginia Swimming League meet of the 2026 Division 7 season takes place this Saturday, June 27. The Dolphins will host the Dominion Hills Thunderducks.
- Waynewood swimmers available for this meet will need to indicate status by 11 pm on Monday, June 22.
- The meet is at WRA. Dolphins are scheduled to warm up at 8:00 am. Please arrive 10 minutes earlier at 7:50 am.
- Volunteer signups for this meet open Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
- Swimmers indicating availability will be notified of team selections no later than Thursday evening via email.
- We’ll share more meet details later in the week.
5) Teen night, Thursday (6/25)
The teens are definitely doing something this week. And we’ve heard rumors (very fun ones) of what it might be but we’re doing the responsible thing and letting it all become official before we say something. So consult your local teen. They’ll meet at the WRA lot around 6:30 pm. Please be advised, this is not an official team activity – it’s organized by coaches and sometimes parent volunteers as something of an extracurricular but all teenage team swimmers are welcome to join. Please note it is only for registered Waynewood team members in the 13-14 and 15-18 age group – no requests for exceptions please.
6) Can-struction pep rally, Friday (6/26) @6 pm
It’s a pep rally, it’s a food drive, it’s art! It’s also a competition! Start bringing canned goods, and other non-perishables to donate to United Community to the pool during practices this week. At the pep rally our teams will use them as building materials. May the most creative and charitable team win! And, as is tradition, there will be cheers and the announcement of the week’s practice monsters … don't miss it!
7) Fort Hunt Sportsmen Relays
Indicate swimmer availability (here) by 11:00 pm Monday for the Fort Hunt Sportsmen Relays meet taking place on Wednesday, June 24 at 6:30 pm (Waynewood warm-up at 5:20 pm) at Stratford Recreation Association (2300 Brinitzer Way, Alexandria, VA 22308).
This is a seeded meet (swimmers are selected by the head coach, like an A meet). Included (attached) is a Dolphins 101 explainer on Fort Hunt Sportsmen Relays.
- This meet is ALL relays.
- Instead of swimming against just one team, there are a bunch of area teams represented (MVP, Stratford, Riverside Gardens, Little Hunting Park, Mansion House….)
- There are relays where boys and girls swim together, ones that include different aged swimmers.
8) Look ahead
A reminder that we announced three schedule changes on Thursday to the season calendar (Fort Hunt Sportsmen Relays, team photo day, and a future teen night) so don’t be caught off guard with old information. In next week’s Sunday newsletter we’ll have information about:

- Team and individual photo session (now 6/30)
