Waynewood Dolphins Lap-a-thon (Wednesday, July 1)
Dolphins seek to collectively swim 30 km, raise $10k for swim program at Lap-a-thon distance swim event
Registration & Sponsorship Now Open!!!
Waynewood Dolphins summer swim in the Northern Virginia Swimming League (NVSL) emphasizes 50m swims (and 25m for 8 & unders). But competitive swimming, from high school to the Olympics, emphasizes much longer distances. The Dolphins Lap-a-thon is a fun, collaborative, and lightly competitive event challenging swimmers to expand their swimming horizons by completing a distance swim while raising funds for swim programming and equipment.
Here are the details for the Lap-a-Thon:
- When and where:
- Wednesday, July 1 beginning with older swimmers at 7:00 am.
- The team will distribute a schedule with no-earlier-than (NET) start times for heats prior to the event.
- The exact schedule and length of the event will depend on swim registration numbers – we expect to be done by 1:00 pm at the absolute latest.
- All swim heats will occur in the WRA lap pool.
- Distances -- Swimmers will complete a timed distance freestyle swim based on their age group:
- 11-12, 13-14, 15-18 swimmers – 500m
- 9-10 – 300m
- 8 & under – 200m
- Awards and recognitions:
- Every participant will receive a limited-edition Waynewood Dolphins Lap-a-Thon swim cap.
- The age group that raises the most money will earn a donut party during practice.
- If the Dolphins meet or exceed both the fundraising and distance goals for the event, all age groups will earn a donut party during practice.
- The boys and the girls with the top three legal times from each age group will be recognized for their achievement.
- The team will tally the distances for all completed swims to see how far the Dolphins swam together.
- Cost and registration:
- $20 per swimmer – this will help cover event expenses and support the team.
- Register here through Tuesday, June 30 at noon.
- Sponsorship:
- Sponsor swimmers for the Lap-a-thon here.
- Fees for the Zeffy fundraising platform are purely optional.
- Donations mentioning multiple swimmers will be split evenly among those listed absent other direction (prior to the event).
- The age group raising the most funds wins a donut party at practice.
- If the Dolphins meet or exceed both the $10k fundraising and 30 km distance goals for the event, all age groups will earn a donut party during practice.
- All proceeds benefit the Waynewood Recreation Association swim team (a.k.a. Waynewood Dolphins)
